My only advice is this: find the line between realism and surrealism. Trolling people by assuming the characteristics of the average Christian/atheist/communist/fascist/liberal/conservative (or whatever) is boring. There are many people like this out there who can do it and they don't even have to try, because this is what they really believe. Realistic trolling is good only when you are sure that there is a potential lulzcow out there or when things get personal and you just want to mess their forum/chat/group.

You have to be the special one. The unrealistic madman, yet good enough to be true.
Don't be just a Christian who believes in God.Be the Christian who believes a lot in aliens.
Don't be the conservative who is just being a conservative, but start going on about how liberals are being commanded by Jews, who are descendants of a Nephilim.
Not a communist who believes that all things should be shared, but the communist who thinks that all people should get surgeries in order to look alike.
Also, add controversial traits to your trolling persona. Add some pedophilia, beastiality, sadomasochism and lots of arrogance (just not all-together).

Realistic trolling is boring and less lulzy. Your opponents have practised on previous challengers, who were better than you (being actual followers of such ideas).
But few of them -if not none- is ready for the real madman. No one is ready for "that special guy".

As for "developing Stockholm Syndrome", I think it's acceptable to an extent. People often bond when debating on forums, regardless of the fact that they have different views. It makes you more believable. Just do not soften up and give out your true identity (i.e.: a troll).

read a lot of books. Get a larger and more complex vocabulary. Learn a little philosophy, learn the basic principles of many world religions, and stay up to date with the news. Your mind has to be sharp and fast. You also have to be really good at arguing.

Depends on what kind of people you want to troll, what subject you want to talk about.

MUSIC
-Last.FM: join an "anti-something" group (preferably, one that's against metal) and start bashing their music. People on Last.FM are morons and get trolled easily, though everyone tries to play it cool. If user is below 22, tell him that he's not getting laid. If not, tell him he's acting like a baby and takes things too seriously.
-4chan's /mu/: trying to argue that hipster music is good on /mu/ will bring some chaos, even if most know that you're trolling. You might also try calling mainstreamfags and newfags those who don't know some underground bands "you're listening to" (just find some on your own).

RELIGION/PHILOSOPHY
-R. Dawkins' forums: this is full of teenagers and people who believe that Dawkins' books alone have disproved God. You may think that trolling as a Christian would be a clever move, but the truth is that people there laugh at agnostics even more. Call them close-minded and arrogant for not being agnostics.
Any Christian forum: just be a REALLY weird Christian.

POLITICS
-Anarchists on YouTube: try to be that chaotic-anarchist-type, the one who knows nothing about Anarchism and only wants to break stuff. Leave comments that stand for chaos and destruction at videos of true anarchist (punk) bands.

Adding to your list of who to troll in the music realm, I've noticed that a LOT of Indie fans (myself included) get pissed off if you insult a band that we like. We're almost as bad as metal fans haha.
